Bonaire Grocery Stores 2023
Here is a quick rundown on some of grocery stores - based on personal experience and the information I have pulled from Facebook groups, YouTube videos (Kevin and Liz Grogan) and a Bonaire travel agency (BonairePros).
3 of the main grocery stores are grouped together a very short distance from the airport; Van Den Tweel, Warehouse Bonaire and Bondigro. Famoso Supermarket is also located in that area but is smaller.
Van Den Tweel
- the “nicest” grocery store on Bonaire.
Van den Tweel offers a wide variety of grocery products from Europe and the USA. Part of a large Dutch chain, they specialize in fresh produce, fruits, fresh meat, chicken, fish, dairy and more. You’ll also find a complete bakery, large wine section and a huge selection of deli items, meats and cheeses from around the world.
Why you want to shop here: their assortment is HUGE
Why you might not want to shop here: it’s the most expensive supermarket of Bonaire
Opening hours: 8 am to 8 pm, 7 days a week (opening days or hours can vary on holidays)
Said to be a good place for beef.
Warehouse Bonaire
Warehouse is owned by Van den Tweel and offers a wide selection of produce and grocery items similar to the flagship store. Although not as upscale and about half the size, the Warehouse offers all the basics at slightly lower costs.
Now with a larger frozen food section.
Why you might not want to shop here: their selection of fresh fruits and vegetables is limited. The store is smaller.
Opening Hours: 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday.
Bondigro
The Bondigro – short for Bonaire Discount Grocery – is a cooperative supermarket that opened its doors in 2014. A total of 150 residents combined forces to offer an alternative to the more expensive chain supermarkets mentioned above. They offer a basic assortment of everyday groceries.
Why you want to shop here: it’s the cheapest supermarket on Bonaire
Why you might not want to shop here: They do not take credit cards and their assortment is basic.
Opening Hours: 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday.
Less than a kilometer away is a lesser known store called PIETERSZ Pietersz market or distribution . This market is reported to be good for larger quantities of meats.
Downtown there is:
Top Supermarket
Offers a variety of grocery products, fruits and vegetables and has their own bakery. It’s in the old Cultimara supermarket and the outdoor murals on the building displays some of Bonaire’s more well known residents.
Why you might not want to shop here: it’s downtown so traffic and parking can be a hassle. Has been said to be more expensive.
Opening Hours: 8 am to 7 pm Monday to Saturday
Zhung Kong Supermarket walking distance from Hamlet Oasis
They offer produce and all kinds of American and European grocery items. They also have an impressive variety of liquors and spirits, as well as beer and wine. When all the other supermarkets close for holidays – Zhung Kong usually still opens for business.
Some have said it is one of the more expensive grocery stores.
Opening Hours: 8 am to 8 pm 7 days a week
BonTera
Terra Basket
Produce market across street from Hamlet Oasis
Zarpin
Fresh Fish
Directions to Zarpin: start at the roundabout by Van den Tweel Supermarket. Take the Southern exit towards Sorobon. About 2 minutes down the road, on your right is Zarpin. If you reach the soccer field and baseball park, you have gone too far. Address Kaminda Lac #18, Tera KoraOpening hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 12:30 pm, 3 pm-6 pm. Closed Saturday / Sunday.
