The Grand Canyon
This page is in progress - photos and more information will be added soon. Please read what I have so far and let me know what you are most interested in learning more about. Also you can check out more hiking experiences at "A Few of My Favorite Hikes".
The Grand Canyon is one of my most favorite places to visit.
If you have not experienced the Grand Canyon, you really should.
The Grand Canyon is beyond description but I will try to give you an idea of what it is like. The Grand Canyon is immense with lots of ways to experience the canyon.
Here are a few quick thoughts on how to experience the Grand Canyon.
Perhaps the most important thought is to take your time. The more time you have the more you can relax and take in the majesty of it all. Don’t just get out of your car and walk up to the first viewpoint, say wow and leave. Stick around and spend a couple days or at least several hours. Take a stroll and see the canyon from as many angles as you have time.
People come from around the world to hike through the canyon. In 2018 I hiked from the North Rim to the South Rim with my son. This was one of the most incredible experiences in my life. So far at least … we will be returning this summer to hike from one rim to the other and then back.

The Grand Canyon is incredible even if you do not hike from one rim to another.
The Grand Canyon can be experienced in many different ways. There are 3 main areas of the Grand Canyon that the National Park System maintains for visitors.
The “South Rim” is a popular place for many reasons. The views are awesome. The South Rim area has most everything a visitor would want. Moose may cross your path but the South Rim area is otherwise well developed. Lots of lodging options including an expansive campground, an RV park, hotels within the park including canyonside hotel rooms and several other hotels a short shuttle ride away. There is a full grocery store, plenty of dining options and even a medical clinic. There are ranger talks and cultural demonstrations.

The North Rim area is a little more remote - you will be hours away from a hospital. The North Rim does have a lodge with a dining room with an incredible view.
The lodge has cabins with porches offering fabulous views of the canyon. In the campground area is a general store with the essentials.
A short hike from the North Rim campground is the trailhead for the North Kaibab trail. This 14 mile trail to the bottom of the canyon is the most incredible trail I have hiked. According to the National Park System hikers pass through “every ecosystem to be found between Canada and Mexico”. When my son and I hike up the trail in June the overnight low temperature on North Rim may dip into the 30’s. At the bottom of the canyon the temperature will likely be over 100 degrees.
The other main park area I have visited is “Desert View”. This is a very interesting area of the canyon. Check out this video for more information.
